Japanese double words

みなさん、2016年は　どんな年でしたか？ わたしは、ほぼほぼ計画通りに過ごすことができた一年でした。

ところで、みなさんは　“ほぼほぼ”という言葉を　聞いたことがありますか？ 実は、この言葉は、辞書で有名な三省堂が主催した今年の新語大賞に選ばれました。 新語として選ばれる基準は「その年を代表する言葉で、今後の辞書に掲載されてもおかしくないもの・今後定着しそうな言葉」なんだそうです。 流行語大賞とコンセプトは違って、耳に残るインパクトのある言葉ではありませんが、これから次第に広まって日常的に使うようになるのではないかという視点で選ばれるこのイベントは、面白いと感じました。

さて、この“ほぼほぼ”という言葉・・・100％とは言えませんが、「ほぼ」よりも100％に近い状態のことをいいます。このように同じ単語を重ねてできた言葉を「畳語（じょうご）」と言うのですが、日本語には、この畳語が数えきれないほどあります。 みなさんも畳語を使って　2016年を表してみませんか？ そこそこの一年？　それとも、上々の一年？　あるいは、へとへとの一年？　 まだまだ　いろんな一年が表せそうですね。

“ほぼほぼ”　の一年（いちねん）

ところで、みなさんは　“ほぼほぼ”という言葉（ことば）を　聞（き）いたことがありますか？ 実（じつ）は、この言葉（ことば）は、辞書（じしょ）で有名（ゆうめい）な三省堂（さんせいどう）が主催（しゅさい）した今年（ことし）の新語大賞（しんごたいしょう）に、選（えら）ばれました。 新語（しんご）として選（えら）ばれる基準（きじゅん）は「その年（とし）を代表（だいひょう）する言葉（ことば）で、今後（こんご）の辞書（じしょ）に掲載（けいさい）されてもおかしくないもの・今後（こんご）定着（ていちゃく）しそうな言葉（ことば）」なんだそうです。 流行語大賞（りゅうこうごたいしょう）とコンセプトは違（ちが）って、耳（みみ）に残（のこ）るインパクトのある言葉（ことば）ではありませんが、これから次第（しだい）に広（ひろ）まって日常的（にちじょうてき）に使（つか）うようになるのではないかという視点（してん）で選（えら）ばれるこのイベントは、面白い（おもしろい）と感（かん）じました。

By the way, have you heard of the term 'hobo-hobo'? Actually, this word was chosen for this year's New Word Prize which is held by Sanseido, which is a firm famous for making dictionaries. The criteria needed in order to be chosen as the New Word is that it has to be “a word represents that particular year, it wouldn't seem out of place to publish the word into the dictionary from here on, and that it is word that will more than likely become a household word in time”. I felt that this event was interesting since the word is chosen from a different viewpoint than that of the concept of the buzzwords contest, in that it is not a word that stays on your mind or creates an impact, but one that will gradually spread and may become a word that gets used in everyday conversation.

So, the word 'hobo-hobo' …. it doesn't mean 100% but is a situation which is closer to 100% than the word 'hobo'. Words like this which are made by repeating the same two words are known as “Jyogo” (or double words) and in Japanese the number of these double words are too many to count.

Try to use some “Jyogo” to express what kind of year 2016 was for you. Was it a 'soko-soko' year ? Or perhaps a 'jo-jo' year ? Or could it have been a 'heto-heto' year for you ? There are probably still (or 'mada-mada') some more expressions we can come up with!
