Japanese Enkai Etiquette

Japanese office workers and friends often have drinking parties at Izakaya or Japanese pubs. These are a great way to get to know people in Japan in an informal setting, and also enjoy some Japanese cuisine.

But even though these are informal gatherings, there are some rules of etiquette that should be followed and these can trip up a first-timer , whether they are people from a foreign country or young person who has newly joined the company.

先日、高校時代の友人と居酒屋で食事をしていた時のこと。 宴もたけなわ、楽しく料理を食べていたところ、突然友人の一人が 「お!これは何と見事な関東一残し!」と叫んで、真ん中にあった 食べかけの料理の皿を写真にとり、SNSにUPするではありませんか。 「関東一残し?何それ~?聞いたことないよ。」 日本語教師としての血が騒ぎます

友人の解説いわく、飲み会などで大皿の料理をみんなで分けて食べる時、 最後に1個だけ残ってしまってそれをなかなか誰も食べない状態を 言うとのこと。確かに真ん中に置かれたお皿には色々な種類の 焼き鳥がすべて、一つづつ残っていました。

調べてみると、宴会の料理の最後の1つを、遠慮して誰も手をつけない 関東人の気質をいうとのことで、昔からある言い回しだそうです。 確かにこういう状況は「あるある~」ですね。 ですが、関東一残し(またはひとつのこし)という言葉は初めて聞きました。 まだまだ日本語は奥深く、そしておもしろいです。

先日(せんじつ)、高校時代(こうこうじだい)の友人(ゆうじん)と 居酒屋(いざかや)で食事(しょくじ)をしていた時(とき)のこと。 宴(えん)もたけなわ、楽(たの)しく料理(りょうり)を食(た)べて いたところ、突然(とつぜん)友人(ゆうじん)の一人(ひとり)が 「お!これは何(なん)と見事(みごと)な関東一残(かんとういちのこ) し!」と叫(さけ)んで、真(ま)ん中(なか)にあった食(た)べかけの 料理(りょうり)の皿(さら)を写真(しゃしん)にとり、SNSに UPするではありませんか。 「関東一残(かんとういちのこ)し?何(なに)それ~?聞(き)いたこと ないよ。」 日本語教師(にほんごきょうし)としての血(ち)が騒(さわ)ぎます

Kantou Ichi Nokoshi

This happened the other day when I was having a meal with some friends from my high school days at a Japanese Izakaya. The party was in full swing when one of my friends suddenly shouted, “Wow ! This is a wonderful example of 'Kantou Ichi Nokoshi' !” and took a photo of the half-eaten plate of food in the middle of the table, and probably put it up on their SNS site.“'Kantou Ichi Nokoshi' ? What's that ? I've never heard of that.” The Japanese teacher in me got excited.

According to my friend's explanation, its the situation at drinks parties and such when you have big plate of food in the middle for everyone to share and one piece of food is left on it and its difficult for anyone to take it.Certainly on the plate in the middle there were various types of yakitori grilled chiken spits all with just one of each type left over.

After looking it up, I found that from old times there has been a saying that Kantou people have a trait at drinking parties, where everyone is too reserved to reach out and take the last piece of food. And certainly I've often seen this scene. But it was the first time for me to hear this phrase 'Kantou Ichi Nokoshi'. The Japanese language is still deep and interesting, isn't it.
