Memories of Japanese dialects

When I was a kid, not long after moving from Hyougo prefecture from Shizuoka prefecture, I saw some girls from my class playing in the neighborhood. I wanted them to let me into their group, so I called out to them “Uchi mo yoshite!” (Let me join in!) but the girls looked at each other and silently walked away.

I went home sadly, and told my mother about it and she let me know that in Hyougo prefecture the word 'yoshite' in Shizuoka prefecture means 'stop'. Later some friends taught me that in Shizuoka prefecture you say, “Watashi mo katashite”.

Next, when I moved from Shizuoka prefecture to Hiroshima prefecture, I wanted to join in a conversation with some girls from my class, so I said to them, “Watashi mo katashite”, but this time the girls did not understand what I was trying to say. The Shizuoka word 'katashite' means 'clean up' in Hiroshima.

The different dialects were like foreign languages to me as a child. I remember listening to conversations between classmates and constantly asking, “What does that word mean?”

Even now as an adult I sometimes have to move, but now I look forward to discovering what different words they have in the new towns. Each areas unique warmth can be found in their dialects. Unfortunately, I can no longer speak in the Hyougo dialect or Shizuoka dialects, but those memories firmly remain.
