Japanese calligraphy : Shodo

Recently, I started to learn Shodo or Japanese calligraphy. Shodo is the art of drawing characters using a brush and black ink. You concentrate on drawing the character while thinking about its balance and the stroke order. The time seems to fly by as you write sheet after sheet.

Fudemoji or calligraphy work is often seen used on menus and on the signs in lots of different Japanese washoku restaurants from sushi stores to izakaya (Japanese pubs). And in many Japanese elementary schools, 3rd year students take Shodo lessons once a week, and at the beginning of the new year in competitions for the first calligraphy writing of the New Year, the students write characters energetically on large Japanese writing paper. Even when you write the same word, so many different personalities appear, almost as if each character is talking to you.

The below photo shows the piece I wrote during the first lesson and the above photo shows the piece I wrote during my fourth lesson. I've only just started so I really look forward to trying out lots of different works.
